Google Adsense

When using Google AdSense it is critical to understand that the best results are found through experimenting yourself. However, there are a few tips that seem to work on a universal level. By implementing, or at least experimenting with these; you are likely to see better results from Google AdSense.

Placement
Placement is key when it comes to Google AdSense. You will want your ads to be visible to the user but not to the point where they appear to be the only thing that is visible.

Place the Google AdSense ads in a prominent place around the top/left part of your page or under your headlines, where your visitors are most likely to look at.
If you have an article page with a long body of text, the bottom of that article is a good place for Google AdSense ads. For a short body of text, it is good to put the Google Adsense ads above the content. Use more text ads than image ads as text ads are more descriptive.

Placing images next to ads or above ads does help in attracting user attention. The best place to put your search box is at the top right corner.

The top three Google AdSense formats are:

336x280 large rectangle. Display up to 4 ads on a page
300x250 medium rectangle. Display up to 4 ads on a page
160x600 wide skyscraper. Display up to 5 ads on a page

Coloring
Coloring is something that some people have mixed feelings on. Yet it is from my personal experience that the AdSense ads that blend in with the page do out-perform those which are made to have themselves stand out. By making the ads blend in with the page users may just see a normal link that you are trying to show them. And ultimately they will feel better that you are not trying to bog them down with advertisements.

Choose a bold color for the ad title to help draw attention to your ads.

Border. The thin layer at the bottom of each ad, which continues around the entire ad unit.
Background. The shaded area behind the ad text
Title. The ad headline.
Text. The one or two lines of ad copy in the middle of each ad.
URL. The destination URL

Content
Content is going to be what makes you money to begin with. So instead of putting too much focus on increasing your CTR and page impressions; focus on writing good, relevant content. By doing so you will be serving up ads more relevant to what the visitor wanted to read and an increase in CTR will be apparent from doing so.

Quantity
In most cases it will be beneficial to keep ad units to a minimal. Many people will think that more ad units means a greater chance that people will click their ads, which may be true, but Google displays the highest paying ads first. So rather than putting 3 units of 4 on each page, try 2 units of 2 for a bit to see if this benefits you.

Quality
Sometimes ads will be served up that you don't want your visitors to see. Be it a competitor or an advertisement to something that you feel is poor. Do not be afraid to exercise your right to use the ad filter.

Experiment
Above all else experimenting on your own is crucial. Through expirimenting you are able to get a very good understanding of what works best for your site. You can keep notes on what led to good results and continue with it, and what leads to undesired results and avoid it in the future.
